7 Things You Can Do to Feel Happier Now

Do some exercise! Getting in some physical activity is a proven way to boost your mood. Try going for a brisk 30 minute walk today, and do that three times this week to notice an increase in positive emotions. For an increased boost try to get outside for at least part of this time, being in fresh air, sunlight, and around nature has also shown to increase feelings of happiness.

Do something you enjoy! Sometimes the best way to feel happier is to do something that you actually enjoy. Whatever this may be, doing something you enjoy is good for your emotional wellbeing and offers a distraction from stress and an opportunity to re-charge. Try watching a funny movie, listening to your favourite music, or meeting up with a friend. If you can’t make the time to do an activity you enjoy, try writing for 20 minutes about a positive experience you have had. This can help put you in a happier mood!

Do something for someone else! Acts of kindness done for other people have shown to have a significant positive impact on your mood. This could include buying someone’s coffee, donating to a cause, or giving a gift to a friend. Acts of kindness do not have to involve spending money though, trying helping someone who you know could use a hand or sharing with a friend how much they mean to you. Try carrying out five acts of kindness this week and see how it improves your own happiness!

Do nothing! The best thing you can do to feel happier might be doing nothing. Especially if you are already feeling overwhelmed with the business of your life. Making the time for complete rest after work can help you feel more energized and recharged for the next day. Try creating some boundaries for the use of technology in your life by aiming to shut your phone off after dinner or for a certain period of the day.

Do something! Contrary to doing nothing, doing something might be more helpful for you to relieve stress and feel more energized or help you to relax. Trying taking ten minutes to complete something off your to-do list, such as folding the laundry or sending an email. The sense of accomplishment will boost your mood and help you to continue moving forward. Be considerate of what is best for you at this moment.

Do something new! While it is helpful to know what usually helps boost your mood doing the same thing all the time can eventually decrease the actual impact of the activity on your happiness. Try doing something new that you might enjoy like buying yourself flowers in your favourite colour. Try to interchange new activities with the ones you usually rely on to continue the mood boosting effects of doing things you enjoy!

Do something mindful! Try practicing a short meditation as a part of your daily routine and notice how it affects your overall mood. Or continue to build your practice of gratitude. Be mindful of what you’re grateful for and notice the positive things in your life. Being happy with what you already have is an instant way to improve your mood.
